SONY to support MP3

SONY electronics have announced that it will provide support for the MP3 format in it's digital devices. SONY uses it's own propreitary format ATRAC3 which compresses the music files and can only be played on SONY music devices.

Due to gaining popularity of iPod which supports MP3 format, this move could help SONY electronics to gain some more market share in the digital music market. Sony plans to release new devices and also is working to make available software that will let owners of current models upgrade their devices to add MP3 support.
